In a benchmark test performed by CNET.com, Windows XP outperformed Vista even with Vista updated with Service Pack 1. XP was more than twice as fast. Microsoft was going to make computer manufacturers require purchasers to by Vista instead of XP after January 31. That date has now be moved back five more months until June.
This is the type of stuff that is behind Apple's new advertising campaign (you know, the one with John Hodgman ("I'm a PC") and Justin Long ("and I'm a Mac")), about how Mac's new Leopard OS is so much better than what is available for PCs. A lot of people remember that Microsoft is capable of releasing an operating system like Windows ME.
I was planning to buy a new computer to replace my present one purchased in June 2003. When I purchased my old computer, I was afraid of being an early adopter of XP so I bought it with 2000, which was still an option at the time. I have been happy with my choice for most of the time since then, but the last year or so, I have felt like a dinosaur, and I'm too lazy to go to all of the hassle of installing a new operating system.
I guess I'll just sit on the sidelines and wait for the dust to settle.

I have a similar problem. My PC is 7 (!) years old altho the hard drive was replaced a few years ago. Over the years it has gotten horrendously slow and slower. But I don't seem to have the time to focus on the purchase of a new one. Plus I need a laptop for work and, well, same problem.
Is anyone reading these things?
